Aspen Gold is the culumnation of the first 8 weeks of the Celebration. I would see Matt Sievers paintings after getting coffee from the cafe of cold mountains with a pop of warm Aspen trees and thinking “I want to paint aspens.” So I did. But different. I also was influenced by my neighbor Erin Mattlock around the corner and her work with gold leafing and thought this would be a ‘golden’ opportunity to tie in the aspens of this painting to the frame I was going to put it in. Which, you guessed it, was also gold.

Deep darks are a rare thing to see in watercolors, but I knew that if I really wanted to use the gold frame I needed to make this painting bold enough in its values of light and dark so it would not be overpowered by the frame. It worked. The bright yellows of the aspens are front and center and stand out against the shadowed background creating a sense of drama. The waters are still and yet there is a sense of movement with the sweeping landscape.

This is strongest composition of any painting I have done. When artists are close to other artists we inspire each other. This painting is proof my work is all the better for it.

23 x 38 in watercolor on cold pressed Arches paper. Gold leaf. UV protected. Custom gold frame.
