Token Story

One definition of the word token is, “a thing serving as a visible or tangible representation of a fact, quality, or feeling.” The native american chief in this sculpture holds such a token in his hand. He proudly holds an arrowhead necklace that has been passed down from his grandfather to his father, and from his father to him. While this arrowhead necklace may not hold much value to anyone else, to him it is priceless because the arrowhead respresents something much more than monetary value. The chief feels as if his father and grandfather are a part of that arrowhead, with all of their stories, wisdom, and experience attached. Now as he looks out toward the distant horizon, he realizes the time has come for him to pass on this precious token to his son. He pauses to contemplate all the things his son might do and what he will pass on to the next generation.

No doubt, we all have some token or memorabilia that we hold dear to our hearts that we would like to pass on to future generations. As you study this beautifully sculpted and thought provoking piece, the artist invites you to think about what you want to pass on to someone dear to you.
